Delta, with a population of 108,455 as of 2021, is the largest in size of any of the municipalities of the Greater Vancouver Metropolitan area.
The town has grown enormously over the past 60 years. The population numbered only 14,500 in 1961. Delta has also become very diverse. One person in five is South Asian. The Chinese community comprises nearly 8% of the population and there are active Filipino and Japanese communities.
The city indicates that 36% of its population is comprised of visible minorities, and 3% of residents are persons of First Nation or Metis heritage.
The Jewish population is growing quickly throughout the lower mainland but remains small in Delta. Nearby synagogues though can be found a few minutes away in neighbouring Richmond.
Mayor Harvie was elected in 2018 and has promoted the city’s diversity. The city website states that Delta has worked tirelessly to ensure that the values of diversion, acceptance and diversity are reflected in the community.
We thank Mayor George Harvie for his ongoing support and determination in supporting initiatives that help fight antisemitism and hate in our country.
