JEWISH HERITAGE MONTH PARTNER: WHITCHURCH-STOUFFVILLE, ONTARIO

Mayor Iain Lovatt

Whitchurch – Stouffville helped kicked off Jewish Heritage Month with a tweet on May 1 recognizing the importance of the month.

Located 50 km north of Toronto in York Region, the town has grown to a population of 50,000 and indeed over the past decade has had among the fastest growth rates of any municipality in the Greater Toronto Area.

Whitchurch Township traces its history back to 1792 and there is a strong sense of history in the community as well as a sense of pride in the new municipality’s robust growth and success.

Whitchurch-Stouffville came into being in 1971 when the two former townships were merged. Today most of the increasingly diverse population is to be found In the Stouffville portion of the municipality.

The Jewish community remains small in the town and there are no local synagogues or institutional buildings. Synagogues and other nearby institutions and services for the needs of the Jewish community however are not too far away and can be accessed in Markham or Richmond Hill, about a half hour drive.

Apprised of Jewish Heritage month, Mayor Iain Lovatt, indicated that the municipality was proud to be a B’nai Brith partner. While the town does not issue proclamations, the Mayor ensured that the community would help highlight the month through its social media posts inviting residents to celebrate Jewish Heritage Month.
