Surrey recently surpassed Quebec City to become Canada’s 11th most populous city. With its population more than doubling in the past three decades, Surrey is currently British Columbia’s second largest city, with a population of 570,000 residents.
The Jewish community is growing in British Columbia, including in Surrey. Surrey is home to a growing number of Jewish community institutions, including the Burquest Jewish Community Association,
White Rock/South Surrey Jewish Community Centre and the Centre for Judaism of the Lower Fraser Valley.
Former Mayor Doug McCallum was an exceptional partner with B’nai Brith, initiating the tradition of proclaiming May as Jewish Heritage Month. This year, newly elected Mayor Brenda Locke continues to demonstrate her commitment to supporting Jewish Heritage Month by sending a video proclamation.
