JEWISH HERITAGE MONTH PARTNER: BURLINGTON
In 2022, Burlington Mayor Marianne Meed-Ward proclaimed every May to be Jewish Heritage Month in the City of Burlington. For 2023, Mayor Meed-Ward has graciously issued a video proclamation, reaffirming Burlington’s commitment to the Jewish community and gratitude for the community’s contributions to the city.
The municipality is now approaching a population of 190,000, making it Canada’s 28th largest city. The city’s Jewish population is approximately 1,000 but has been growing in recent years. There are currently no major Jewish institutions in Burlington. The nearest synagogues are in Hamilton and Oakville.
We thank Mayor Meed-Ward for her continued support of the Canadian Jewish community and her recognition of Jewish Heritage Month.
En 2022, la mairesse de Burlington, Marianne Meed-Ward, a proclamé le mois de mai Mois du patrimoine juif dans la ville de Burlington. Pour 2023, la maire Meed-Ward a gracieusement publié une proclamation vidéo, réaffirmant l’engagement de Burlington envers la communauté juive et sa gratitude pour les contributions de la communauté à la ville.
La municipalité approche aujourd’hui les 190 000 habitants, ce qui en fait la 28e plus grande ville du Canada. Minister Karina Gould was born and raised in Burlington, Ontario, the riding she represents today. Minister Gould is a graduate of McGill University and has a master’s degree in international relations at Oxford University.
Prior to her career in politics, she worked in Washington, D.C., as a consultant on the Migrant and Development Program. She later joined the Mexican Trade Commission in Toronto to work as a Trade and Investment Specialist.
Minister Gould was elected in the 2015 election at the age of 28 and again in 2019 and 2021. She was appointed the Minister of Democratic Institutions and became the youngest female Cabinet Minister in Canadian history at the age of 29.
She has since held the title of Minister for International Development and is currently the Minister of Families, Children & Social Development.
Jewish Heritage Month carries special significance for Minister Gould, whose paternal grandparents are Holocaust survivors and whose parents met on a Kibbutz in Israel.

La ministre Karina Gould est née et a grandi à Burlington, en Ontario, la circonscription qu’elle représente aujourd’hui. La ministre Gould est diplômée de l’Université McGill et a obtenu une maîtrise en relations internationales à l’Université d’Oxford.
Avant de se lancer dans la politique, elle a travaillé à Washington, D.C., en tant que consultante pour le programme Migrants et développement. Elle a ensuite rejoint la Commission mexicaine du commerce à Toronto en tant que spécialiste du commerce et de l’investissement.
La ministre Gould a été élue lors des élections de 2015, à l’âge de 28 ans, puis à nouveau en 2019 et 2021. Elle a été nommée ministre des Institutions démocratiques et est devenue la plus jeune femme ministre de l’histoire du Canada à l’âge de 29 ans.
Depuis, elle a occupé le poste de ministre du développement international et est actuellement ministre des familles, des enfants et du développement social.
Le mois du patrimoine juif revêt une importance particulière pour la ministre Gould, dont les grands-parents paternels sont des survivants de l’Holocauste et dont les parents se sont rencontrés dans un kibboutz en Israël.
