JEWISH HERITAGE MONTH PARTNER: Etobicoke North, Ontario

Recognizing the important contributions that the Jewish community has made to Ontario, Premier Dalton McGuinty’s government proposed that the province recognize and celebrate every May as Jewish Heritage Month.

The motion was adopted by the legislature and assented to on April 24, 2012, making Ontario the first jurisdiction in Canada to formally enact a Jewish Heritage Month motion. In fact, Ontario’s motion predates by six years Bill S-232, which decreed May as Jewish Heritage Month across Canada.

In October 2020, Premier Doug Ford’s government passed legislation adopting the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s definition on antisemitism continuing Ontario’s lead on fighting antisemitism in Canada. The Ford government was also the first to introduce Holocaust education in grade 6, emphasizing the need to educate about antisemitism at an early age.

Over half of all Canadian Jews reside in Ontario, and the province has been grateful for the contributions that the community has made in culture, society, economy and politics.

We thank Premier Ford for continuing Ontario’s strong historical support for the Jewish community and their prioritization of the fight against antisemitism.
