JEWISH HERITAGE MONTH PARTNER: HALTON DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD, ONTARIO

B’nai Brith celebrates our ongoing relationship with the Halton District School Board (HDSB), which serves Oakville, Burlington, Halton Hills and Milton, west of Toronto.

Margo Shuttleworth, HDSB Chair, indicated that the HDSB has always acknowledged and celebrated History and Heritage Months in various ways over the years including sharing of public acknowledgement through its various social media platforms and inclusion on its calendars. Jewish Heritage Month has been one of the months that has been acknowledged.

At the Board’s May 2022 meeting, Vice Chair Ehl Harrison made the following statement about Jewish Heritage Month:

“Jewish Heritage Month Act, 2012, Ontario is home to approximately 200,000 Jewish Canadians. Since the 1800s, the Jewish Canadian community has made significant contributions to the growth and prosperity of Ontario, while overcoming tremendous obstacles. According to B’nai Brith Canada, in 2021 there was an 7.2% increase in incidents of vandalism, violence, harassment, and online hate aimed at Jews in Canada, the highest number ever in the 40 years since tracking of such incidents started.

We thank Board Chair Margo Shuttleworth and Director of Education, Curtis Ennis, for providing their greetings to celebrate and honour Jewish Heritage Month in 2023.
