JEWISH HERITAGE MONTH PARTNER: Barrie-Innisfil
Barrie-Innisfil MPP Andrea Khanjin has an inspiring story on her journey arriving to Queen’s Park.
Born in Moscow during the days of the Soviet Union, her family had to suppress all aspects of their Jewish identity, including menorahs on Chanuka. When the Union fell, her sought refuge in Cuba. It was there that they learned about Canada’s embrace of freedom, which ultimately led them to immigrate to Barrie.
In Canada, the Khanjin family can freely express their Jewish faith and celebrate their heritage.
MPP Khanjin was elected to serve the constituents of Barrie-Innisfil in the 2018 Ontario provincial election and was re-elected in 2022. She has served as the Deputy Government House Leader since 2019 and is also the Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs.
In her second term, MPP Khanjin has emerged as a strong advocate for the Jewish community and a partner with B’nai Brith Canada. She has been a vocal advocate for taking action to fight antisemitism and hate in Ontario.

La députée provinciale de Barrie-Innisfil, Andrea Khanjin, a une histoire inspirante à raconter lors de son arrivée à Queen’s Park.
Née à Moscou à l’époque de l’Union soviétique, sa famille a dû supprimer tous les aspects de son identité juive, y compris les menorahs pour Chanuka. À la chute de l’Union, elle s’est réfugiée à Cuba. C’est là qu’ils ont appris que le Canada embrassait la liberté, ce qui les a finalement conduits à immigrer à Barrie.
Au Canada, la famille Khanjin peut librement exprimer sa foi juive et célébrer son héritage.
La députée provinciale Khanjin a été élue pour servir les électeurs de Barrie-Innisfil lors des élections provinciales de 2018 en Ontario et a été réélue en 2022. Elle est leader parlementaire adjoint du gouvernement depuis 2019 et est également l’adjointe parlementaire du ministre des Affaires intergouvernementales.
Au cours de son deuxième mandat, la députée Khanjin s’est révélée être une ardente défenseuse de la communauté juive et une partenaire de B’nai Brith Canada. Elle s’est fait l’avocate des mesures à prendre pour lutter contre l’antisémitisme et la haine en Ontario.
