JEWISH HERITAGE MONTH PARTNER: BRITISH COLUMBIA
British Columbia is Canada’s westernmost province with a population of roughly 5.3 million residents. Approximately 26,000 Jewish Canadians live in B.C., comprising around 0.55% of the province’s population.
Dating back to the 1850’s, the Jewish presence in B.C. started during the Gold Rush. Many of these Jews settled in the port city of Victoria and helped facilitate the sale of gold out of the province.
Following the Gold Rush of the 19th Century, BC’s Jewish community centered predominantly in and around the Greater Vancouver Area. Many European Jews moved to Vancouver following World War 2 and began to establish synagogues and congregations.
Today, BC’s Jewish community sits at around 30,000, with 1 in 4 living outside Vancouver.
Premier David Eby began his political career as the MLA for Vancouver-Point Grey in 2013 and has represented the riding since. In the John Horgan government, Premier Eby served as Attorney General for the province.
Before entering politics, Premier Eby was a lawyer and law professor at the University of British Columbia.

La Colombie-Britannique est la province la plus à l’ouest du Canada, avec une population d’environ 5,3 millions d’habitants. Environ 26 000 Canadiens juifs vivent en Colombie-Britannique, ce qui représente environ 0,55% de la population de la province.
La présence juive en Colombie-Britannique remonte aux années 1850, au moment de la ruée vers l’or. Nombre de ces Juifs se sont installés dans la ville portuaire de Victoria et ont contribué à faciliter la vente de l’or hors de la province.
Après la ruée vers l’or du XIXe siècle, la communauté juive de Colombie-Britannique s’est principalement concentrée dans la région du Grand Vancouver et ses environs. De nombreux Juifs européens se sont installés à Vancouver après la Seconde Guerre mondiale et ont commencé à fonder des synagogues et des congrégations.
Aujourd’hui, la communauté juive de Colombie-Britannique compte environ 30 000 membres, dont un sur quatre vit en dehors de Vancouver.
Le premier ministre David Eby a commencé sa carrière politique en tant que député de Vancouver-Point Grey en 2013 et représente la circonscription depuis lors. Sous le gouvernement de John Horgan, le premier ministre Eby a occupé le poste de procureur général de la province.
Avant de se lancer en politique, le premier ministre Eby était avocat et professeur de droit à l’Université de la Colombie-Britannique.
