JEWISH HERITAGE MONTH PARTNER: WELLAND, ONTARIO
Welland, Ontario is a city in the Niagara Region. It is often called the place where “the rails and water meet” in reference to the railways and rivers that characterize the city. Located between Niagara Falls and Buffalo, Welland serves as a middle ground in an important Canadian region.
Historically, Welland had a small Jewish community that settled in the Crowland neighbourhood. By 1917, a shul and mikvah had been established, enabling a small Jewish community to settle in the city. Today, Welland has a small Jewish community that is actively involved with the wider community.
We thank Welland City Council for proclaiming May 2023 as Jewish Heritage Month in the city.
Welland, en Ontario, est une ville de la région du Niagara. Elle est souvent appelée le lieu où “les rails et l’eau se rencontrent”, en référence aux chemins de fer et aux rivières qui caractérisent la ville. Située entre les chutes du Niagara et Buffalo, Welland joue un rôle intermédiaire dans une importante région canadienne.
Historiquement, Welland comptait une petite communauté juive qui s’est installée dans le quartier de Crowland. Aujourd’hui, Welland compte une petite communauté juive qui participe activement à la vie de la collectivité.
