Sarnia, Ontario is city located on Lake Huron, across from the US city of Port Huron, Michigan. With a population of 72,000, the city has long served as a maritime transportation hub for Southern Ontario, helping to facilitate greater trade with the United States.
The city has a large base of industrial and petrochemical manufacturing that provides many other Canadian cities and regions with vital products such as oil, gas and chemicals.
The Jewish community in Sarnia has existed for over a hundred years, first being served by the Davis St. Synagogue from 1922 to 1951. It has since been replaced by the Ahavas Isaac Synagogue, erected in 1951.
Though smaller than in decades prior, the Jewish community in Sarnia remains closely connected and committed to attending weekly services and celebrating the High Holidays together.
We appreciate Mayor Mike Bradley for submitted a video greeting calling on all residents of Sarnia to honour and celebrate their Jewish community in May for Jewish Heritage Month.
