Located on the Bay of Quinte, Quinte West is an amalgamation of Trenton, Frankford, Murray and Sidney. The city hosts the Canadian Forces Base Trenton and is an important city along the 401 corridor. Thanks to the Trent-Severn Waterway terminus in Quinte West, the city also serves as an important transport hub for Ontario.
The history of Jews in Quinte West dates to 1820, when European Jews started immigrating into Canada. Local Jewish historian Arthur Finkle notes how in 1888, the city had a high of 12 kosher butcher shops. Jews have moved into the city throughout the decades, and today, Quinte West has a small Jewish community that is served by Sons of Jacob congregation located in nearby Belleville.
We appreciate Mayor Jim Harrison and City Council for paying homage to their Jewish history and for proclaiming May 2023 as Jewish Heritage Month in the city of Quinte West.
Située sur la baie de Quinte, Quinte West est une fusion de Trenton, Frankford, Murray et Sidney. La ville accueille la base des Forces canadiennes de Trenton et est une ville importante le long du corridor de la 401. Grâce au terminus de la voie navigable Trent-Severn à Quinte West, la ville sert également de centre de transport important pour l’Ontario.
L’histoire des Juifs à Quinte West remonte à 1820, lorsque les Juifs européens ont commencé à immigrer au Canada. L’historien juif local Arthur Finkle note qu’en 1888, la ville comptait un maximum de 12 boucheries casher. Les Juifs se sont installés dans la ville au fil des décennies et, aujourd’hui, Quinte West compte une petite communauté juive desservie par la congrégation des Fils de Jacob, située dans la ville voisine de Belleville.
