Originally from Lebanon, Aref Salem arrived in Canada 31 years ago in pursuit of a better, safer life.
He has earned a degree in microbiology from the University of Montreal and a business degree from HEC Montreal.
Before entering municipal politics, Aref helped to manage and run a small business for 17 years.
He was first elected as City Councilor for the Norman-McLaren district in Montreal in 2009. He has been serving that district ever since, becoming the the Leader of Ensemble Montreal in 2021.
Councillor Salem pursued a career in politics to give back to the city and the country that provided him refuge in his time of need.
B’nai Brith thanks Councillor Salem for his support of Jewish Heritage Month and for being at the forefront of fighting antisemitism in Montreal.
Originaire du Liban, Aref Salem est arrivé au Canada il y a 31 ans à la recherche d’une vie meilleure et plus sûre.
Il est titulaire d’un diplôme en microbiologie de l’Université de Montréal et d’un diplôme en administration des affaires de HEC Montréal.
Avant de se lancer dans la politique municipale, Aref a contribué à la gestion et à l’exploitation d’une petite entreprise pendant 17 ans.
Il a été élu pour la première fois conseiller municipal du district Norman-McLaren à Montréal en 2009. Il sert ce district depuis lors et deviendra le chef d’Ensemble Montréal en 2021.
Le conseiller Salem a poursuivi une carrière en politique afin de redonner à la ville et au pays qui lui ont offert un refuge en temps de besoin.
B’nai Brith remercie le conseiller Salem pour son soutien au Mois du patrimoine juif et pour avoir été à l’avant-garde de la lutte contre l’antisémitisme à Montréal.
