Halifax is the capital of Nova Scotia with roughly 350,000 residents. The city is a significant economic centre of the Atlantic region in Canada, housing many national institutions.
The city was historically significant to the development of Canada and has long served as an important Maritime port for trade and commerce.
The Jewish presence in Halifax dates to 1750, although it was not until 100 years later that the Halifax Jewish community began to expand. In the 1860’s, public records of Jewish weddings and other community events began to resurface, indicating a growth in the population.
Since the 1920’s, the Jewish population of Halifax has remained at around 1,500.
The community is served by the Beth Israel synagogue, the Chabad-Lubavitch of the Maritimes, the Shaar Shalom congregation and the Atlantic Jewish Council. There is a Halifax Joint Hebrew School, which is jointly run by the two synagogues.
B’nai Brith thanks Mayor Mike Savage and the Halifax City Council for supporting Jewish Heritage Month and for highlighting the contributions of their Jewish constituents over the decades.
