JEWISH HERITAGE MONTH PARTNER:
THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO
Thunder Bay is the largest city in Northwestern Ontario, with a population of 108,000 residents as of 2021. It serves as a regional hub for much of Northern Ontario, with many flying into Thunder Bay for medical, financial and government services.
The city sits on Thunder Bay at the head of Lake Superior. Located at the end of Canada’s Great Lakes navigation system, the city has and continues to serve as an important maritime transit hub.
With a small Jewish community of 250 people, the city is served by Shaarey Shomayim Congregation, which is non-denominational and holds regular Shabbat services in addition to High Holiday celebrations. Importantly, the congregation is the only mikvah between Winnipeg and Toronto, a distance of over 2400 km.
We thank Mayor Ken Boshcoff for sending us a video greeting celebrating Jewish Heritage Month and inviting his citizens to celebrate with all Canadians this May.
