MONTREAL – B’nai Brith Canada is appalled that several massive swastikas were carved into the snow-covered ice at a community skating rink on the Island of Montreal.
On Tuesday evening, a member of the Jewish community visited the outdoor skating rink at Danyluk Park in the Town of Mount Royal, an on-island suburb of Montreal. Video reviewed by B’nai Brith shows at least four large swastikas on the surface of the rink.
B’nai Brith reported the incident to the hate crimes unit of the Montreal police force (SPVM). We also notified Peter Malouf, Mayor of Town of Mount Royal. Mayor Malouf reacted immediately by launching an investigation. The perpetrators remain unidentified at this time.
“It is alarming to see the skating rink, such a basic symbol of Canadian identity and winter fun which attracts children and families, being defiled by symbols of hatred,” said Michael Mostyn, Chief Executive Officer of B’nai Brith Canada. “This repulsive act of antisemitism should be condemned by all, and we hope that the perpetrators are identified and held to account.”
Tuesday’s incident is far from the first antisemitic outrage involving sporting facilities in Canada. In August, participants in a Toronto-area Jewish baseball league found a giant swastika drawn in the sand at a baseball diamond where they were set to play.
As previously reported by B’nai Brith Canada, there was an unprecedented surge of violent antisemitic incidents in May 2021 throughout Canada, with the highest monthly total since the Annual Audit of Antisemitic Incidents began in 1982.

Mardi soir, un membre de la communauté juive a visité la patinoire extérieure du parc Danyluk à Ville Mont-Royal, une banlieue insulaire de Montréal. La vidéo examinée par B’nai Brith montre au moins quatre grandes croix gammées à la surface de la patinoire.
B’nai Brith a signalé l’incident à l’unité des crimes haineux du Service de police de Montréal (SPVM). Nous avons également avisé Peter Malouf, maire de Ville Mont-Royal. Le maire Malouf a immédiatement réagi en lançant une enquête. Les auteurs restent pour le moment non identifiés.
« Il est alarmant de voir la patinoire, un symbole si fondamental de l’identité canadienne et des plaisirs hivernaux qui attire les enfants et les familles, être souillé par des symboles de haine », a déclaré Michael Mostyn, chef de la direction de B’nai Brith Canada. “Cet acte d’antisémitisme répugnant doit être condamné par tous, et nous espérons que les auteurs seront identifiés et tenus responsables.”
L’incident de mardi est loin d’être le premier outrage antisémite impliquant des installations sportives au Canada. En août, des participants d’une ligue juive de baseball de la région de Toronto ont trouvé une croix gammée géante dessinée dans le sable sur un terrain de baseball où ils devaient jouer.
Comme indiqué précédemment par B’nai Brith Canada, il y a eu une vague sans précédent d’incidents antisémites violents en mai 2021 dans tout le Canada, avec le total mensuel le plus élevé depuis le début de l’audit annuel des incidents antisémites en 1982.
