More than 80 years after Anne Frank put pen to paper, her words continue to echo across theatres, classrooms, and communities. How do modern artists honour her voice while speaking to the world we live in now?

Join Dr. Belarie Zatzman, Senior Scholar and Professor Emerita in the Department of Theatre, Dance & Performance at York University, for a compelling exploration of contemporary stagings and visual portrayals of Anne Frank.

This discussion will explore how The Diary of Anne Frank has remained an enduring point of entry for Holocaust education through the creative choices of modern-day artists. From casting and design to narrative framing, we’ll explore how these dramatic retellings continue to shape the way families and young audiences understand not only the Holocaust but the persistence of antisemitism today.

Speaker Bio

Dr. Belarie Zatzman, PhD, is a Senior Scholar and Professor Emerita in the Department of Theatre, Dance & Performance, York University. Zatzman’s research focuses on Canadian Theatre for Young Audiences [TYA], as well as on contemporary approaches to performing memory and memorial. Her publications include: “Janusz Korczak and the children:  Responding to Hannah Moscovitch’s The Children’s Republic” (in press); “Applied Theatre Encounters at Canada’s National Holocaust Monument”; “Difficult Knowledge in Theatre for Young Audiences: Remembering and Representing the Holocaust”; “Fifty-one Suitcases: Traces of Hana Brady and the Terezin Children”; and a co-edited special volume of the Canadian Theatre Review on Jewish Performance in Canada.
