An appalling United Nations vote to draft a resolution that would have challenged Jewish historic ties to the Temple Mount and the Old City of Jerusalem has been postponed after it was determined by the resolution’s creators that it would not garner enough votes to ensure its passage.
A vote on the joint Palestinian-Jordanian draft resolution was expected Tuesday before United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Committee in Istanbul. However, according to a Times of Israel report, the vote was shelved just minutes before the proceedings were set to begin.
The draft resolution refers to the Temple Mount only by its Arabic name and describes it solely as a Muslim holy site, ignoring Jewish history. It additionally claims the Western Wall is a part of Al-Aqsa Mosque.
B’nai Brith Canada is pleased by the current developments and hopes the suspension of the draft will become permanent.
“B’nai Brith wholly condemns these blatant attempts to erase Jewish history,” said Michael Mostyn, CEO of B’nai Brith Canada. “The Jewish people have had a presence in the land of Israel since biblical times and motions like these only serve to distort the Jewish nature of Jerusalem and its holy sites.
“Any denial of Jerusalem’s central role in Judaism must be unequivocally rejected by the international community.”
