Statement in Support of Ensuring Professionalism and Impartiality
We, the undersigned Canadian medical doctors, unequivocally condemn the Nov. 10 letter circulated by the Health Workers Alliance for Palestine (HAP) and signed by some of our colleagues across the country.
The statement – which contains numerous falsehoods about the nature of the ongoing conflict between Israel-Hamas and misinterpretations of international humanitarian law – betrays the commitment to ensuring the highest standard of patient care that drives those who dedicate their lives to the practice of medicine, and is contrary to the guiding tenets encapsulated in both the Hippocratic Oath and the Oath of Maimonides.
We note that some of the HAP signatories occupy positions of leadership at universities across Canada. Because of the power dynamics inherent in teacher-learner relationships, in some cases this letter is also representative of learner intimidation.
We are concerned that the HAP signatories have established a dangerous environment that is contrary to the health and wellbeing of our patients. By politicizing and even weaponizing the role of medical doctors within our community to advance a geo-political agenda, the HAP has done a grave disservice to all Canadian health care workers and seriously compromised the public’s faith in our collective ability to care for people in an impartial manner.
In order to restore the faith of all Canadians in their healthcare system we pledge to:
- Uphold the responsibility to heal and care for all those who seek our services irrespective of their ethnic, racial, or religious background, as is required by the Canadian Medical Association’s Code of Ethics and Professionalism;
- To ensure that medical students receive an education in an environment free from intimidation;
- Confirm that HAP’s Nov. 10 letter is not reflective of the Canadian medical profession at large, and that we do not endorse its signatories’ repudiation of the Canadian Medical Association’s Code of Ethics and Professionalism;
- Reaffirm that our mission must remain, above all else, to prevent and alleviate human suffering.
