HALIFAX – Police have arrested and announced criminal charges against a New Glasgow, N.S., man after B’nai Brith Canada filed a complaint based on his troubling online behaviour.

Luke Alexander MacDonnell, 22, will face charges of promoting genocide and inciting hatred.

“B’nai Brith Canada observed MacDonnell using social media to make threats targeting Jewish people,” said Richard Robertson, Director of Research and Advocacy for B’nai Brith Canada. “We alerted law enforcement, who acted in short order to prevent him from causing harm.”

MacDonnell expressed a desire to “see all Zios killed,” using a hateful term that is considered an antisemitic dog whistle. “I want all Israelis murdered,” he said. “Kill every Israeli.”

In a chilling message to his followers, MacDonnell also called on anyone who was armed to “go out and kill, injure, take prisoners and bomb.”

“B’nai Brith Canada commends New Glasgow Regional Police for their prompt action on this file,” said Henry Topas, Quebec and Atlantic Regional Director for B’nai Brith Canada. “Our leaders need to take action to combat this escalating threat of violence targeting Canada.
