MONTREAL – The student union at Quebec’s largest anglophone university has formally abandoned its support for the antisemitic Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement, B’nai Brith Canada has confirmed.
On April 6, the Concordia Student Union (CSU) posted a lengthy apology to the Jewish community over antisemitism, making reference to antisemitic graffiti on campus and promising corrective measures, mandatory antisemitism training for club executives, and “the inclusion of a Jewish perspective in CSU operations.” However, the statement made no reference to the CSU’s adoption of BDS in 2014, which has fueled hostility toward Jewish students at Concordia since that time.
B’nai Brith then reached out to CSU representatives to commend their bold apology and urge them to fully implement it by abandoning BDS. The CSU replied that it had done so, and removed all mention of the BDS Movement from its website.
Until now, the CSU had been the only Canadian student union outside of Ontario to adopt BDS. It had also been the only one known to have actually divested itself of holdings in Israeli companies. Its reversal is therefore a significant setback for BDS in Canada.
“The leadership of the Concordia Student Union should be commended for charting a brave and just new course,” said Michael Mostyn, Chief Executive Officer of B’nai Brith Canada. “The CSU’s formal move to reject BDS is a critical step in rebuilding trust with the Jewish community, and should be followed by all student unions that still endorse that antisemitic endeavour.
“We at B’nai Brith will continue our efforts, until not a single student union remains in support of BDS in this country.”
Even before its 2014 adoption of BDS, the CSU had long been known as a hotbed of anti-Jewish and anti-Israel radicalism. In 2002, it opposed the appearance of then-Israeli Opposition Leader Benjamin Netanyahu on campus, precipitating an infamous riot in which a Holocaust survivor was kicked in the groin and a rabbi and his wife spat upon by anti-Israel protestors.
In January of this year, a 28 year-old man was arrested after defacing a Montreal synagogue with swastikas and attempting to set it on fire. He was found to have signed a pro-BDS petition while a student at Concordia, but was declared not criminally responsible for his attack on the synagogue following a psychiatric examination.

MONTRÉAL – L’association étudiante de la plus grande université anglophone du Québec a officiellement abandonné son soutien au mouvement antisémite «Boycott, désinvestissement et sanctions» (BDS), a confirmé B’nai Brith Canada.
Le 6 avril dernier, l’Association étudiante de Concordia [Concordia Student Union] (CSU) a publié une longue excuse à la communauté juive pour son antisémitisme, dans laquelle elle fait référence aux graffitis antisémites sur le campus, à la formation contre l’antisémitisme obligatoire pour les dirigeants des associations et à «l’inclusion d’une perspective juive dans les opérations de la CSU». Cependant, en aucun moment la déclaration n’a fait référence à l’endossement du mouvement BDS par la CSU en 2014, qui a alimenté l’hostilité envers les étudiants juifs de Concordia depuis lors.
B’nai Brith a ensuite contacté la CSU pour la féliciter de ses excuses audacieuses et l’exhorter à mettre ces dernières pleinement en œuvre en abandonnant leur support au mouvement BDS. La CSU a répondu qu’elle l’avait fait et a supprimé toute mention au mouvement BDS de son site Web.
Jusqu’à présent, le CSU était la seule association étudiante canadienne à l’extérieur de l’Ontario à supporter le mouvement BDS. Elle était également la seule connue à s’être dissociée de ses participations dans des sociétés israéliennes. Son changement de cap est donc un revers important pour BDS au Canada.
«Le leadership de l’Association étudiante de Concordia doit être félicité pour son courage et pour avoir ouvert de nouveaux horizons», a déclaré Michael Mostyn, chef de la direction de B’nai Brith Canada. «La décision formelle de la CSU de se dissocier du mouvement BDS est une étape critique dans l’instauration de la confiance avec la communauté juive, et devrait être suivie par toutes les associations étudiantes qui soutiennent encore cette entreprise antisémite.»
«Nous, chez B’nai Brith, nous poursuivrons nos efforts jusqu’à ce qu’il ne reste plus aucune association étudiante en faveur du mouvement BDS dans ce pays.»
Avant même d’avoir supporté le mouvement BDS en 2014, la CSU était reconnue depuis longtemps comme un foyer de radicalisme anti-juif et anti-israélien. En 2002, elle s’est opposée à l’apparition du chef de l’opposition israélienne d’alors, Benjamin Nétanyahou, sur le campus, occasionnant ainsi une émeute tristement célèbre dans laquelle un survivant de l’Holocauste a reçu des coups de pied dans l’aine et que des manifestants anti-israéliens ont craché sur un rabbin et son épouse.
En janvier de cette année, un homme de 28 ans a été mis en état d’arrestation après avoir dégradé une synagogue montréalaise par des croix gammées et tenté d’y mettre le feu. Il a été reconnu pour avoir signé une pétition pro-BDS alors qu’il était étudiant à Concordia, mais a été déclaré non responsable criminellement de son attaque contre la synagogue à la suite d’un examen psychiatrique.
B’nai Brith encourage les juifs canadiens et leurs alliés à remercier la CSU pour ses mesures courageuses dans la lutte contre l’antisémitisme en envoyant un courriel à [email protected].
