OTTAWA – B’nai Brith Canada is disturbed by media reports that officials of the Islamic Republic of Iran may already be residing in, or seeking to enter, this country.

“Canada must not serve as a sanctuary for agents of state oppression or sponsors of international terror,” B’nai Brith Canada wrote Thursday in a letter to Foreign Minister Anita Anand.

Canadian media outlets are reporting that more than a dozen such former Iranian regime members already live in Canada. Our letter calls on the Federal Government to use existing sanctions against Iranian leaders to target anyone known to be associated with its military or state apparatus. It further urged Ottawa to ensure that law enforcement agencies cooperate with immigration authorities to screen individuals already within Canada or attempting to enter the country.

“Canada has the tools to prevent former Iranian assets from entering or continuing to reside in this country,” said Austin Parcels, Research and Advocacy Manager for B’nai Brith Canada. “Our leaders must muster the political will to act decisively.”
