MONTREAL – B’nai Brith Canada joined several Rwandan-Canadian organizations Tuesday to condemn Yves Engler, a Quebec-based political agitator, for a series of social-media posts minimizing the 1994 genocide against Rwanda’s Tutsi population.

“[Engler’s] statements were offensive, misleading, and inconsistent with the well-established historical record,” B’nai Brith Canada wrote, in a statement co-authored by the Humura Association, Ibuka Canada, Page Rwanda, and the Memory Keepers Association of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda.

The outcry stems from a series of X posts Engler authored on July 12, 2025, that appeared to minimize the atrocities carried out against the Tutsi community. Among other things, he alleged that the number of casualties had been exaggerated for “propaganda” purposes.

“Both the Jewish and Rwandan communities have faced state-sanctioned extermination campaigns,” said Richard Robertson, B’nai Brith Canada’s Director of Research and Advocacy. “We share a collective understanding of what it means for any people to be systematically targeted for erasure, and for their histories to be politicized, distorted, and weaponized.

“B’nai Brith Canada will continue to advocate for historical accuracy and pursue accountability in all forums. We call on all public figures, political parties, and institutions to do the same.”
