B’nai Brith Canada has communicated to universities across the country that it will be monitoring antisemitism on their campuses and will not hesitate to stand up for the rights of Jewish students.

“The status quo is unacceptable,” B’nai Brith wrote in letters addressed to the administrators of more than 80 schools in Canada. “It is the university’s responsibility to create a welcoming and respectful learning environment so that each student has the opportunity to thrive.”

B’nai Brith also urged the institutions to enforce existing anti-hate policies and amend Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (DEI) protocols to include Jewish community members.

“We will be watching how institutions address hateful incitement and antisemitic acts on their campuses this year,” said Richard Robertson, B’nai Brith’s Director of Research and Advocacy. “Universities must not again permit unreasonable and illegal demonstrations such as the anti-Israel encampments that cropped up in April last year. These encampments were often the sites of inexcusable support for terrorist organizations and represented a full-throated assault on Canadian values.

“We hope administrators have learned from their mistakes and will adopt proactive measures to ensure the wellbeing of the Jewish members of their communities.”
