MONTREAL – B’nai Brith Canada has condemned the demonstrations repeatedly targeting the Notre Dame Basilica, one of Canada’s most revered Christian sanctuaries.
“This campaign of disruption can be attributed to the same vitriolic fringe that has been targeting the Jewish community since Oct. 7, 2023,” said Richard Robertson, B’nai Brith Canada’s Director of Research and Advocacy. “It is unacceptable that Christian spaces are experiencing a similar scourge of targeted harassment.
In April, radicals proclaimed a desire to wage “Jihad” during a rally at Notre Dame. Since then, regular demonstrations have featured hateful slogans and calls for the destruction of Israel, including its Jewish and Christian citizens.
“The choice of this location is intentional,” Robertson said. “Using a sacred Christian site in this way is meant to bully, provoke, and assert control over shared public space. Our leaders cannot continue to look the other way while extremists erode our values and trample on this country’s multicultural, pluralistic foundations.”
