B’nai Brith Canada recognized the city of Lachute, Que. on Thursday with a certificate for preventing the celebration of a Nazi pilot at a ceremony in March.
Hannah Reitsch, known for her close ties to Adolf Hitler and the first woman to fly a helicopter, was initially scheduled to be honoured by as part of a Women Aviation Worldwide Week at a ceremony in Lachute.
Following cooperative pressure from both B’nai Brith and the city of Lachute, as well as a myriad of criticism and media exposure, the event organizers announced that there would be no mention of Reitsch whatsoever at the event.
“We commend the City of Lachute and Mayor Carl Peloquin for their efforts in preventing Reitsch’s mentioning at the ceremony and by doing so, showing incredible sensitivity to the survivors of the Holocaust, their families and so many others who suffered at the hands of the Nazis,” said Harvey Levine, B’nai Brith Canada’s Quebec Region Director.

In a communiqué released prior to the ceremony, the city denounced paying tribute to Reitsch, saying:
“The City of Lachute and the MRC of Argenteuil refuse this activity to be held (in our) territory and on. . .city-owned lands, unless the organizing committee revises their choice in honouring this person… The city and the MRC will not tolerate at any time and under any circumstances activities that glorify people having a history associated with Nazism.”
B’nai Brith Canada thanks the city, Mayor Peloquin and all those involved for all their contributions.

B’nai Brith Canada a tenu à récompenser la ville de Lachute au Québec le 15 juin 2017 avec un certificat suite à ses efforts pour arrêter une cérémonie en l’honneur d’une pilote nazie qui se déroulait mars dernier.
La pilote nazie Hannah Reitsch, qui était la première femme à piloter un hélicoptère, devait être honorée dans le cadre de la Semaine Mondiale des Femmes de l’Air lors d’une cérémonie à Lachute.
À la suite d’une pression conjointe de B’nai Brith et de la Ville, ainsi que d’une panoplie de critiques et d’exposition médiatique, les organisateurs de l’événement ont annoncé qu’il n’y aurait aucune mention de Reitsch à l’événement.
« Nous félicitons la Ville et le maire Carl Peloquin de leurs efforts à empêcher la mention de Reitsch lors de la cérémonie et d’avoir fait preuve d’une sensibilité incroyable pour les survivants de l’Holocauste, leurs familles et tous les autres qui ont souffert face aux Nazis » a déclaré Harvey Levine, directeur régional de B’nai Brith Canada au Québec. »
Dans un communiqué publié avant la cérémonie, la Ville a dénoncé l’honneur en disant :
« La Ville de Lachute et la MRC d’Argenteuil refusent que cette activité se tienne (dans notre) territoire et sur les terres appartenant à la municipalité, à moins que le comité organisateur de l’événement révise leur choix afin de retirer cette personne des honneurs… La ville et la MRC ne toléreront à aucun moment et aucun cas des activités qui glorifient les personnes ayant une histoire associée au nazisme. »
B’nai Brith Canada remercie la Ville, le maire Peloquin et toutes les personnes concernées pour leurs contributions.
