B’nai Brith 13th Annual “Afternoon with the Goldeyes”

Providing a hot lunch and gifts throughout the community

For the second year in a row, one of B’nai Brith’s signature programs, an Afternoon with the Goldeyes, is being conducted in a special format due to Covid restrictions.

At the initiative of Earl Barish and with the help of dedicated volunteers, Liz and Pat Panchuk and others, hot meals and gift bags were delivered to more than 40 service organizations and their members throughout Winnipeg.

The 1800 lunches and gift bags were warmly welcomed and made everyone feel part of the community.

Next year we will hopefully be back in person at the Goldeyes stadium for a baseball game with a catered hot lunch plus gift bag.

Instead of inviting people to Shaw Park, B’nai Brith provided each of more than 40 service agencies with their own event. At picnics and in-house events throughout August, volunteers delivered a free lunch catered by Salisbury House and gifts for up to 50 people.

For Earl Barish and his wife Cheryl it has always been important to give back to the community. Earl started with the first Afternoon with the Goldeyes in 2009, when he was chair of B’nai Brith Canada’s executive board. B’nai Brith has been active in Manitoba since 1909 and serves the community by advocating for human rights and offering several community engagement events each year.

“There are a lot of people in the community who fall through the cracks, who face difficulties and challenges,” Barish says. “I’m always trying to reach out, because I’ve been fortunate in my own life for whatever reason.”

This year’s service organizations are: Arcane Horizons, BGC, Dasch Inc., Eastman Special O, Epic Opportunities, Family Dynamics, First Start Church, Fort Garry Women’s Resource, Good Neighbours Active Living Centre, ImagineAbility, Immigrant Centre, Inclusion Selkirk, Inclusion Winnipeg, Intertribal CFS, L’Arche, Local Investment Towards Employment, Macdonald Youth Services, MacKinnon’s Y-NOT, Main Street Project, Manitoba Possible, Marymound, NEEDS, Pulford Community Services, Rehab Centre for Children, Resource Assistance for Youth, SCE Lifeworks, Shalom Residences, Shared Health-Child Life Development, Siloam – The Madison, St. Amant, Victory Missions, West Broadway Youth Outreach, Wolseley Family Place.

A huge thank-you to our sponsors! Without their support this program would not be possible.
