This week, our community was exposed to yet another act of antisemitism at York University. According to reports, high school students who had journeyed to campus for an anti-racism workshop, including many from the heavily-Jewish Westmount Collegiate Institute in Thornhill, Ont. were told that discrimination against Jews is not a topic worthy of conversation, while being cursed at by York professors and students on account of their supposed “white privilege.”

MONTREAL – Last week, I wrote about the controversial “Passover Against Apartheid” event held at Concordia University. To recap, the Concordia Student Union (CSU) partnered with the Fine Arts Student Alliance and campus group Solidarity for Palestinian Human Rights (note the absence of any Jewish groups) to host an art exhibit and discussion session on why Passover should be a time to support Palestinians “in the face of Israel’s apartheid state,” and to think about, “What blessings can we use to replace ‘Next year in Jerusalem?’”

VANCOUVER – After a week-long referendum, students at the University of British Columbia voted against endorsing the anti-Israel boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) movement, with 48 per cent for and 52 per cent against. Turnout in the referendum also fell well short of the eight per cent quorum required in order for it to be binding.

Earlier this month, swastikas and hate graffiti were discovered in a lecture room at York University, an incident currently under investigation by the Toronto Police Service as "mischief." In response, York came out with recycled statements about tolerance and how York remains a “safe and respectful environment” – even considering the “often politicized atmosphere.” Jewish groups also unequivocally condemned the incident.
