JEWISH HERITAGE MONTH PARTNER: Manitoba Premier
Located in the longitudinal centre of the country, Manitoba is a province of roughly 1.3 million residents. Jews make up about 0.9% of the entire population, with most of the Jewish community residing in and around Winnipeg.
The Jewish history of Manitoba began in 1877 when the first known Jewish residents, Ruben Goldstein and Edmond Colbentz, settled in the province.
After reaching a high of almost 20,000 from 1931 to 1971, the current Jewish population sits at around 15,000. The community today is served by a handful of synagogues and congregations located in and around the Winnipeg area.
Premier Heather Stefanson has been an MLA in Manitoba, serving the community of Tuxedo, since 2000. She has a long career working as a political staffer, first serving in the Mulroney Prime Minister’s Office and later as an assistant to federal Agricultural Minister Charlie Mayer.
Premier Stefanson is a strong ally of Manitoba’s Jewish community and worked with B’nai Brith in 2022 to adopt the IHRA definition on antisemitism in Manitoba.
