B'nai Brith Sports

B’nai Brith Athletics exist in four sports: softball, ice hockey, basketball, and bowling. The leagues all value good sportsmanship and camaraderie. Regulations ensure the league’s non-contact policy. All B’nai Brith Sports Leagues are open to Jewish men and women at least 18 years of age who are B’nai Brith Members, and who agree to abide by all of B’nai Brith’s standard league rules.

Softball League

B’nai Brith is proud to run one of the largest organized softball leagues in all of North America. The league was originated in 1961 and is mainly lodge affiliated. The B’nai Brith Softball League runs from May to September and consists of various competitive levels of slo-pitch and fast pitch, including Executive Leagues for over age 40.

Ice Hockey and Basketball Leagues

The Ice Hockey League and Basketball League are lodge affiliated leagues. Lodges may enter teams in any of several divisions ranging in skill levels. The Ice Hockey and Basketball Leagues are, like all B’nai Brith sports leagues, insistent on a non-contact policy. this policy enables the League to promote good sportsmanship and camaraderie.

Although many of the teams in these leagues are lodge affiliated, it is not a requirement to be affiliated with a lodge to join either league. Some high school teams have been playing in the leagues for years. Both Leagues begin in September/October and conclude in May.

Bowling League

B’nai Brith Canada does not directly oversee organized bowling amongst its members, yet bowling has been one of the most participated sports activities in B’nai Brith. For over 50 years, there has existed two umbrella organizations, namely, Canadian B’nai Brith Bowling Association, (C.B.B.B.A.) And International B’nai Brith Bowling Association, (I.B.B.B.A.) .

C.B.B.B.A. Embraces leagues from Eastern Canada, including Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Thornhill, Hamilton and Windsor.

I.B.B.B.A. Embraces leagues across U.S.A. and Canada, including all leagues affiliated with C.B.B.B.A.

AFFILIATION Nominal annual fee of $2.00 CAN per person (C.B.B.B.A.) and $5.00 US per person (I.B.B.B.A.).

MEMBERSHIP Open to all men and women over 16 years of age. Recently, both associations agreed to allow membership of (1) entire leagues and/or (2) parts of leagues and/or (3) individuals. Each league may have its own internal rules respecting further qualification for membership.

ACTIVITIES 1. Out-of- town tournaments are held each year, hosted in a different City. The C.B.B.B.A. tournament is held in mid-November. The I.B.B.B.A. tournament may consist of one or two host Cities, each March, on different week-ends. For March 2001, the annual I.B.B.B.A tournament will be held in Toronto. For November 2000, Ottawa will host the C.B.B.B.A. annual tournament.
