2001 Audit of Antisemitic Incidents

Patterns of Prejudice in Canada

Endnotes

1. Survey Methodology: A representative sample of 797 Canadians was interviewed February 10-12 and 26-28, 2002. Samples of this size are deemed accurate to within approximately 3.5 percentage points 19 times out of 20. The principal investigators on this study were Dr. Conrad Winn and Robert Laufer.

3. In 1986, 31% of francophones as a whole perceived Jews as having too much power compared to 40% among those with high school or less. By contrast, the corresponding proportions today are 26% and 21%.

For a thorough discussion of this issue, see Matthew Lauder’s “The Importance of Websites to the Extreme Rightwing,” http://www2.ca.nizkor.org/ftp.cgi/people/l/lauder.matthew/extremist_websites.0109. Mr. Lauder is the Director of the Anti-Racism program of the Guelph and District Multicultural Centre.

6. Since the demise of the original HateWatch website, quantifying the actual number of hate sites on the net has become problematic. According to David Goldman, the founder of HateWatch, there were between 500 and 600 such sites active in mid-2000. The Southern Poverty Law Center, while placing the number of hate groups at 600, does not provide website tracking.

See http://www.splcenter.org/intelligenceproject/ip-index.html for details. The Simon Wiesenthal Center does not even use the term “Hate site,” preferring “Problematic Sites” instead. However, a perusal of the SWC material found at http://www.wiesenthal.com/problematic_sites/ reveals a list that is rife with errors, including 404 errors (“Page Not Found”) and multiple listings (and therefore multiple counts) for the same domains.

Although the National Alliance recently announced its return to Canada, and the launch of its “Canadian” website, no articles of this type have appeared promoting the Canadian website, http://www.natall.ca. NATALL.CA is registered to the National Alliance, P.O. Box 32088, Calgary. The administration contact is given as grpeters@hushmail.com. It’s worthwhile to note that although the site is registered as a Canadian domain, it is hosted in Philadelphia by an American firm, SERVE.COM, probably in an attempt to avoid Canadian legal restrictions.
