For Immediate Release
Toronto, December 17, 2002 Reacting to the public apology of former Chief David Ahenakew, Bnai Brith continues to call for hate crime investigations and review of his Order of Canada status.
Rochelle Wilner, National President of Bnai Brith Canada, commented: While David Ahenakew did take the first step of apologizing for his hate-filled tirade and resigning from his leadership positions in Native organizations, there is still grave concern that his apology does not reflect his true feelings. Apologizing for his outburst, however sincere, does not change his beliefs. His attempt to justify his comments as the result of anger and frustration over the plight of his own people is completely invalid.
David Matas, Bnai Brith Canadas senior legal counsel, stated: We commend the Government of Saskatchewan for their commitment to move forward with the hate crime investigations previously announced. Despite the apology by Ahenakew, criminal proceedings are necessary to deter others who may wish to make such grievous statements in the future.
Bnai Brith Canada is at present discussing joint initiatives with Native leaders, including National Chief Coon Come, aimed at promoting better understanding between the two communities.
