“DON’T LET OUR COMMUNITY BE TARGETED”

B’NAI BRITH CANADA URGES GOVERNMENT TO ACT

Toronto, May 24, 2002

For Immediate Release

Toronto, May 24, 2002 — In light of police warnings issued to the Ottawa Jewish community of threats against its houses of worship and institutions, B’nai Brith calls on the government, the police services and the security infrastructure to aggressively pursue all leads, at the same time as increasing its protection to the community across the country.

Rochelle Wilner, National President of B’nai Brith Canada, commented: “The authorities cannot allow our community to be threatened in this manner. We call on the government to enforce all the provisions of its Anti-Terrorism legislation so that every ethnic and religious group in Canada can feel safe.”

Frank Dimant, Executive Vice President, cautioned: “We look to our government to show by its actions both in its domestic and its foreign policy that it will spare no effort to counter terrorism. We expect that following this public alert, the Government of Canada will proceed to round up all the terrorists that are operating in this country.”

In spite of these threats, B’nai Brith Canada will hold its upcoming Annual General Meeting in Ottawa as planned.
