Despite Israel’s Cease-Fire Efforts, No Respite From Palestinian Terror

Graham can show leadership by calling for a vote at United Nations Commission on Human Rights deliberations

Toronto, March 20, 2002

For Immediate Release

The Canadian Jewish community is once again thrust into mourning and frustration by this morning’s suicide bombing attack in Israel that claimed seven lives, including Israeli Arabs, and injured dozens of civilians.

Rochelle Wilner, President of B’nai Brith Canada, illustrated the paradox of negotiating with the Palestinian Authority: “The arrival of General Zinni and Vice President Cheney heralded the possibility of an end to the violence. Israel ended its counter terror operations and withdrew its earlier demand for seven days of quiet. And what does it get in return? Missile fire, gun assaults and this horrifying attack in Nachal Iron (Wadi Ara). These are the negotiating tools of the P.A. The gun, the missile, and the suicide bomb.”

Frank Dimant, Executive Vice President stated: “The most macabre image amid the carnage is the expression of moral equivalence — between such suicide attacks and the counter-terrorist measures taken by the IDF — that guides current Canadian government policy. Foreign Minister Graham, in his recent speech to the Canada-Israel Committee, crystallized this obscenity. He can demonstrate his disdain for terror by calling for a vote on vicious anti-Israel resolutions at the current UN Commission on Human Rights deliberations in Geneva, instead of simply letting them pass by consensus. These resolutions routinely ignore terror attacks against Israeli civilians. Canada must take a leadership role and vote against this series of biased resolutions. Terror against Israeli civilians on the ground works hand in hand with attacks on Israel’s legitimacy at the UN.”

Amos Sochaczevski National Chair of B’nai Brith Canada’s Institute for International Affairs commented: “The killing of Jews and the destruction of the Jewish State are the ultimate goals of the Palestinian Authority and its terrorist confederates. The Palestinian Authority has done nothing to rein in terror, nothing to prevent the killing of Jewish civilians, nothing to stop incitement. Their hollow condemnations are drowned out by the celebrations in the streets of Jenin.”
