For Immediate Release
Toronto, Friday, September 14, 2001 Bnai Brith Canada reached out today to Canadian Muslim organizations to offer them assistance in an effort to bring the two communities together to promote intercultural and interfaith understanding during these difficult times. As the Jewish communitys senior human rights organization, Bnai Brith Canada sent a letter to several groups reaffirming to the Canadian Muslim organizations that Bnai Brith Canada does not condone the singling out of groups and individuals based on religion, and inviting them to a joint meeting to work together.
Bnai Brith Canada has communicated with: the Canadian Islamic Congress, Ishmaili Council, Council of Muslim Communities of Canada, Canadian Council of Muslim Women as well as individual Imams.
This is a time when we must work together in good faith, as we did during the Gulf war and beyond, to counter Islmaphobia, antisemitism and racism, said Rochelle Wilner, National President of Bnai Brith Canada.
Frank Dimant, Executive Vice President of Bnai Brith Canada commented: We are concerned that there is a growing fear within the Canadian Muslim communities that they will be targets for abuse. We would like to offer our assistance and expertise in securing religious institutions and ensuring community safety.
