B’nai Brith Canada asks Canadian Jews to Light an Extra Sabbath Candle

September 14, 2001

For Immediate Release

September 14, 2001 — As millions of people around the world demonstrate their solidarity and solemn remembrance, B’nai Brith Canada is asking all members of the Jewish community who light the traditional Sabbath candles every Friday evening to add an extra candle. We hope that those who do not usually light Sabbath candles will do so tonight in a demonstration of spiritual solidarity with our American brothers and sisters.

The world is united in grief, and standing together against terror.

David Colodny, Chairman of the B’nai Brith Center for Community Action, remarked: “Our humanitarian relief fund for the victims of this terror will address the material needs of the families of the victims. Today’s initiative will begin to meet the spiritual needs, the need for healing, which we all share.”

Pearl Gladman, National Director of the Center, added: “May the light of these candles blaze forth to illuminate the darkest corners of the world. Contributions to our special relief fund can be sent to the Relief Fund for Victims of Terror Attacks in the US via B’nai Brith Canada at 15 Hove Street, Toronto, Ontario M3H 4Y8. For further details or to make a telephone pledge, those interested should call (416) 633-6224 ext. 109.”
