B’NAI BRITH CALLS ON CITY TO INCREASE COMMITMENT TO ANTI-RACISM

June 22, 2001

For Immediate Release

Toronto, June 22, 2001… The League for Human Rights of B’nai Brith Canada was relieved to note that Mayor Mel Lastman apologized immediately and repeatedly for the unfortunate remarks he made with respect to an African country, remarks that were hurtful to all Africans, African Descendants, and indeed to all Torontonians who are proud of our diversity.

“Mayor Lastman’s record of support for human rights issues speaks for itself,” stated Toni Silberman, Chair of the League’s Ontario Region. “He has a long history of respecting and promoting diversity within this city, not only on the basis of race, but also with regard to other protected grounds, such as gender, disability and sexual orientation. It is precisely this municipal support and accessibility that makes Toronto attractive to so many different groups within our society. Regrettably, jokes and sarcasm may still invoke old stereotypes, especially when dealing with race-sensitive situations. These off-handed comments have no less of a hurtful impact on those about whom the comments refer. However, we trust that, given his record, Mayor Lastman’s apology will be taken in good faith, and in the spirit in which it was offered,” concluded Silberman.

Two years ago, the League for Human Rights escalated Blacks and Jews in Dialogue, an ongoing program established to strengthen the ties between the two communities, and to support one another in mutual struggles for equality. The concern over the Mayor’s comments is evidence of the need to continue such alliance building among all communities, and to increase efforts and initiatives to reinforce anti-racist strategies, policies and commitment throughout the City.
