MONTREAL ACTIVIST APPOINTED AS NATIONAL CHAIR OF THE INSTITUTE FOR INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS

May 31, 2001

For Immediate Release

May 31, 2000… The national office of B’nai Brith Canada today released the name of the new Chair of its Institute for International Affairs. Amos Sochaczevski, a well-known community activist from Montreal, will assume his new position effective immediately.

The owner of the Suburban, Quebec’s largest English-language weekly newspaper, Montreal Business Magazine and Montreal Inc., the new Chair is particularly interested in developing the crisis response mechanism of the Institute. “In an era of transition and change, especially in the non-profit sector, it is a particular challenge to be able to strategize to use one’s resources effectively,” he said. “At this time of crisis in the Middle East, all community resources have to be particularly focused not just on community education and mobilization, but on informed and timely response to government, non-governmental entities and the global media.”

Rochelle Wilner, President of B’nai Brith Canada, commented: “We are fortunate to have an individual of Amos’ stature and expertise at the helm of the Institute, our advocacy agency dealing with international human rights issues. I am also pleased to announce that Amos will represent B’nai Brith on the Board of Directors of the Canada-Israel Committee, together with myself and the Executive Vice President.”

Frank Dimant, Executive Vice President, added: “We have appreciated working with Amos in the past in his capacity as a member of our Board of Governors, and he has already demonstrated his energy, commitment and creativity in a number of spheres. With his years of experience in building and maintaining effective communications mechanisms, and his broad understanding of the international arena, he is the ideal candidate. Amos will be working closely with an outstanding professional, Institute Director Ruth Klein, to further the Institute's global advocacy agenda.”
