B’NAI BRITH APPLAUDS GOVERNMENT INITIATIVE TOWARDS FAIRNESS IN EDUCATION FUNDING

May 9, 2001

For Immediate Release

Toronto - B’nai Brith Canada is heartened by this first major step on the part of the Premier and the Government of Ontario in recognizing the importance of rectifying a historic inequity by funding, through tax credits, children enrolled in independent and non catholic denominational schools.

Rochelle Wilner, National President of B’nai Brith Canada, stated, “Families who send children by choice or religious imperative to the independent schools of their own religious or cultural communities will be gratified by this commitment towards equality the Minister has made today. This is very much in keeping with Ontario’s dedication to the principles of diversity and equality in our multicultural environment.”

Frank Dimant, Executive Vice President of B’nai Brith Canada, added, “We are pleased that the Minister and the Premier have recognized the hardship that the current system presented to working families who have made and continue to make great sacrifices in order to educate their children according to the values of their faith or culture.”

B’nai Brith has worked to sensitize elected officials on this issue for many years. In doing so, B’nai Brith has helped the current government understand the need for such legislation, and eventually, equal educational funding for every child in Ontario.
