B’nai Brith League for Human Rights Comments on Minister Fry’s Statement

March 22, 2001

For Immediate Release

The League for Human Rights of B’nai Brith Canada regrets the comments made by Hedy Fry, Secretary of State for Multiculturalism, but welcomed her prompt apology to the community of Prince George, B.C. which she had erroneously linked to recent cross burnings. League National Chairman Professor Stephen Scheinberg stated that “The League has had several reports of various hate groups functioning in parts of British Columbia in the past few years. It is important that the public should be made aware of them but hopefully with more attention to accuracy in the future.”

League Director Dr. Karen Mock expressed her belief that the Minister’s intentions were to raise awareness of and strengthen the struggle against racism and hatred and not to malign the citizens of Prince George. “The Municipality of Prince George is aware of alleged and real white supremacist activity in their area and have formed a task force to deal with this problem and ways to respond to hate activity in their community”, said Dr. Mock.

The League for Human Rights is a national volunteer association dedicated to combatting racism, bigotry and antisemitism. The objectives of the League include human rights for all Canadians, building inter-community relations, and the elimination of racial discrimination and antisemitism. The League accomplishes these goals through educational programs, community action and the provision of legal/legislative interventions.
