CAN ARAFAT CONTROL THE VIOLENCE?

B’nai Brith Canada condemns bomb outrage in Jerusalem’s Mea Sharim

February 8, 2001

For Immediate Release

Toronto, February 8, 2001.As Prime Minister elect Ariel Sharon works to build a governing coalition, Arafat seems unable to control Palestinian violence on the ground that threatens to spiral out of control.

Rochelle Wilner, Senior Vice President of B’nai Brith Canada and National Chair of its Institute for International Affairs, remarked, “Arafat bears total accountability for all violence emanating from the territories, whether it be perpetrated by the stone or by the gun, by lynching or by terrorist bombs. He has a responsibility to end all violence immediately.”

Ruth Klein, National Director of the Institute, added, “If this terrorist outrage is the Palestinians’ response to the democratic will of the Israeli electorate, then concerns for the days ahead seem justified. Provocations such as this can only delay the resumption of negotiations for peace in the area .”
