B'NAI BRITH CANADA CONGRATULATES DEMOCRATICALLY ELECTED ISRAELI PRIME MINISTER

February 6, 2001

For Immediate Release

Toronto, February 6, 2001 . B'nai Brith Canada today issued a statement congratulating Ariel Sharon, the democratically elected Israeli Prime Minister of Israel.

Dr. Lawrence Hart, President of B'nai Brith Canada, stated: “The people of Israel have spoken. We congratulate Ariel Sharon on his election to this post which has previously been held by such leaders as David Ben Gurion, Golda Meir, Menachem Begin, Yitzhak Shamir, and Yitzhak Rabin. We hope that during the difficult times ahead Ariel Sharon will be given the support and strength needed to carry out the functions of head of Israel's government.”

Frank Dimant, Executive Vice President of B'nai Brith Canada stated: “It is regrettable that leaders of Palestinian Chairman, Yasser Arafat's Fatah Movement have threatened to accelerate the war of attrition against the Israeli people. The promise of renewed attacks of terrorism is hardly appropriate from a ‘partner in peace’. I am confident, however, that Ariel Sharon whose campaign was based on peace and security, will prevail on the Palestinian leadership to negotiate afresh to create a climate of trust that will bring about a cessation of warlike activities.”

Rochelle Wilner, Senior Vice President of B'nai Brith Canada and Chair of its Institute for International Affairs, stated: “We, the Jewish people, will unite in our efforts to support the endeavours of Mr. Sharon's quest for peace, as he strives to maintain a strong and vibrant Israel, with Jerusalem as its undivided capital. We commend his proclamation that he is seeking to form a broad-based governing coalition which will best be able to realize the dream of a united people in its ancestral homeland. I look forward to working with the new Prime Minister in the future.”
