BROTHERS OF KIDNAPPED ISRAELI TO ADDRESS MEDIA

January 17, 2001
Call for international intervention to release Israelis held hostage by Hezbollah

For Immediate Release

In an urgent plea for international intervention, Avi and Eyal Avitan, brothers of 21 year-old Adi Avitan who was kidnapped by Hezbollah terrorists from the Israeli side of the Israel-Lebanon border, will address the Canadian media on Friday, January 19. The Avitan brothers are in Toronto for the weekend to raise government and public awareness of the plight of their brother and three other Israelis who were abducted in October in flagrant violation of international law. Their visit will culminate in a community rally on Sunday, January 21 at 12:00 p.m. at Beth Tikvah Congregation, 3080 Bayview Avenue.

Avi and Eyal will speak to the human side of this international humanitarian issue. They have received no information about the condition or whereabouts of their brother or the other hostages, and Hezbollah has denied permission to the International Committee of the Red Cross to visit them. International mediation efforts to facilitate the release of the abductees have thus far been to no avail.

The press conference will be held on Friday, January 19 at 11:00 a.m. at the Consulate General of Israel, 180 Bloor Street West, Suite 700. For security purposes, all media must R.S.V.P. in advance and must present photo identification and press credentials upon arrival.

This campaign is sponsored by Arza; B'nai Brith Canada; the Board of Jewish Education of UJA Federation; Canada-Israel Committee; Canadian Jewish Congress, Ontario Region; Canadian Zionist Federation; the Jewish Agency for Israel; Jewish National Fund; Mercaz; Mizrachi; UJA Federation of Greater Toronto; and the Zionist youth groups.
