The call for submissions has begun for the 2001 Annual Media Human Rights Awards, sponsored by the League for Human Rights of B’nai Brith Canada. The awards, now in their 26^th year, are designed to recognize and encourage the Canadian media for effective and responsible work that sensitizes the public to human rights problems, issues and violations in Canada.

There are 9 categories: Advertising, Film, Magazine, Music, Newspapers, Public Service Announcements, Radio, Television and World Wide Web. Materials submitted must have been produced, published or broadcast between January 1, 2000 and December 31, 2000.

SAMPLE OF PAST WINNERS

• CBC Radio, Sunday Morning - Toronto - The Sentencing Circle - an exploration of white-based systems of crime and punishment which has systematically victimized Canada’s indigenous peoples.
• The Edmonton Journal for ‘Alberta Sterilization Policy which reviews this provincial policy that undermined the rights of disabled and disadvantaged people over a period of 50 years.
• Sioux Lookout Anti-Racism Committee for their website which dealt with the effects and strategies of dealing with issues of racism and resources and strategies to deal with instances of racism.
• The Shuswap Sun, from Salmon Arm, BC, for Food Bank - Natives Shunned, an exposé which examines the discrimination against natives who used the food bank.
• Winnipeg Free Press, for a story entitled Foreign MD’s Fighting Back by reporter Dan Lett.

THE DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS IS FEBRUARY 15^th, 2001

Finalists in each category will be notified and invited to attend the Media Human Rights Award Gala Ceremony to be held on the evening of March 19, 2001 at the Jane Mallet Theatre at the St. Lawrence Centre for The Arts in Toronto.
