For Immediate Release
(Toronto, March 1, 2000...) Reports have confirmed that a fixed trial date has been set for the thirteen Iranian captives to be held on April 13, 2000. The families of the accused have been told to get a lawyer by the end of the week.
Dr. Lawrence Hart, President of B'nai Brith Canada, commented: These arrests were unwarranted and should never have been made in the first place. The thirteen detainees are being used as pawns as part of a wider political agenda.
Frank Dimant, Executive Vice-President, added: While the announcement of the trial date suggests some semblance of judicial process will begin after almost a year of detention, we are disappointed. It would have been more appropriate for the new government to begin its term of office by releasing all of the captives. We will be monitoring the proceedings closely to ensure a mock trial will not occur.
