For Immediate Release
Toronto, December 17, 1996... Following the publication of a Jews for Jesus advertisement in the weekend edition of the Toronto Star, Frank Dimant, Executive Vice President of B'nai Brith Canada issued the following statement: It was with great dismay that the Jewish community was confronted this weekend by a Jews for Jesus advertisement in the Toronto Star. We were under the belief that the Toronto Star was sensitive to this issue, that they had made a commitment not to publish advertisements that are targeted at proselytizing the Jewish community. While we appreciate the Star's efforts to expunge this year's advertisement of references to Jews, the whole raison d'être of Jews for Jesus is to convert Jews to Christianity. This simple fact cannot and must not be ignored.
This advertisement has seriously upset members of the Jewish community as have similar ads in previous year. We call upon the Toronto Star to cease and desist, once and for all.
