Toronto, November 5, 1996... Bnai Brith Canada commends Durham Region Police, Metropolitan Toronto Metro Police and the Ontario Provincial Police in their joint investigation and apprehension of two individuals from Durham who have been charged with willfully promoting hatred. The two individuals are allegedly responsible for hate material that has been disseminated in school yards and front lawns throughout the Durham region.
Rochelle Wilner, National Chair of the League for Human Rights of Bnai Brith Canada stated: The cooperation amongst the various police services exemplifies the kind of joint forces operation Bnai Brith Canada has long been advocating. To combat hate, communities need protection, proactive policing, and strong partnerships.
The arrest of these individuals clearly demonstrates that the police have the ability to go after hate-mongers. Now, we would like to see the same effort applied to the foremost distributor of Hate material in Canada, and perhaps the world Ernst Zundel, demanded Frank Dimant, Executive Vice-President of Bnai Brith Canada
The recruitment of high school students by neo-nazis and other hate groups has been dangerously escalating in the past few years, stated Dr. Karen Mock, National Director of the League for Human Rights of Bnai Brith Canada. The fact that these individuals from Durham were deliberately disseminating hate material in school yards and to the homes of interracial couples is particularly insidious. Charging these recruiters under the hate laws sends a strong message that hate activities will not be tolerated, added Mock.
Bnai Brith Canada is Canadian Jewrys senior advocacy organization and a leader in monitoring neo-nazi and hate groups in Canada. The League for Human Rights of Bnai Brith Canada publishes an annual audit of anti-Semitic incidents, which gauges hate group activity in Canada.
