B'NAI BRITH CANADA DELEGATION DEPARTS FOR FACT-FINDING MISSION TO ISRAEL

For Immediate Release

Toronto, October 15, 1996... Amid increasing tension in Israeli-Palestinian relations and renewed talks on the future of Hebron, a B'nai Brith Canada delegation departs today for Israel where it will participate in the International Conference on the Future of Jerusalem. Sponsored by B'nai Brith Canada's Institute for International Affairs in association with the Begin-Sadat Centre for Strategic Studies of Bar-Ilan University, the symposium features roundtable discussions with senior government and opposition leaders and Jerusalem personalities on the implications of the peace process on the Israeli capital and national security.

Frank Dimant, Executive Vice-President of B'nai Brith Canada, issued the following statement: “At a time when Israel is under intense international pressure, we must reaffirm the centrality of Jerusalem to Jews worldwide and our eternal commitment to the city as the capital of Israel. The Jerusalem Symposium provides a forum through which Canadian Jewish leaders will avow their support for the Israeli government as it enters into critical negotiations.”

The Jerusalem Symposium runs from October 15-22. It includes a tour of Jerusalem's political flash points, the Jewish quarter, Palestinian institutions and government ministries in East Jerusalem. Delegates will also tour Judea and Samaria where they will discuss with experts the increasing hostility between the Israeli and Palestinian communities and observe the aftermath of last month's clashes.
