B'NAI BRITH CANADA TO LEAD DELEGATION TO INVESTIGATE CRITICAL SITUATION IN ISRAEL

For Immediate Release

Toronto, September 26, 1996...The outbreak of fighting between Palestinians and Israeli soldiers in East Jerusalem, Ramallah, Bethlehem and Gaza has provided a tense backdrop for the upcoming International Conference on the Future of Jerusalem, sponsored by the Institute for International Affairs of B'nai Brith Canada in association with the Begin-Sadat Centre for Strategic Studies of Bar Ilan University. The symposium, to be held October 15-22, will feature roundtable discussions with senior government and opposition leaders and Jerusalem personalities on the current and future implications of the peace process on Israel's capital. It will include a tour of Jerusalem's political flash points, the Jewish quarter, Palestinian institutions and government ministries in East Jerusalem. Delegates will also tour Judea and Samaria where they will discuss with experts the increasing hostility between the Israeli and Palestinian communities and observe the aftermath of this week's fighting.

Frank Dimant, Executive Vice-President of B'nai Brith Canada, issued the following statement: “The events of the past two days reveal the fragility of the relationship between Israelis and Palestinians. The Jerusalem Symposuim comes at a critical time in which Canadian-Jewish leaders must see first-hand the changing situation in Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria in order to understand the implications for the future of these areas and for the security of Israel.”
