For Immediate Release
Toronto, September 20, 1996... B'nai Brith Canada applauded the Canadian Judicial Council decision today that Quebec Superior Court Judge Jean Bienvenue be removed from the bench.
In rendering a judgment last year, Mr. Justice Bienvenue suggested that
Jews who died in Nazi death camps did not suffer. He also attacked women
as capable of more treachery than men.
B'nai Brith Canada had in the past absolutely refused to accept Justice
Bienvenue's half-hearted apology. The final decision is now in the hands
of the Senate and House of Commons.
Lyle Smordin, National President of B'nai Brith Canada said, "it is extremely important that Members of Parliament and the Senate bring this process to its justifiable conclusion and send a strong message to Canadians that such views will not be tolerated".
Smordin reiterated the organization's concern that if a strong message is not sent out against anyone who minimizes the Holocaust, racists and Holocaust deniers easily exploit the situation.
