For Immediate Release

Toronto, August 20, 1996... B'nai Brith Canada is pleased to announce the appointment of Lisa Armony to the position of National Director of the Institute for International Affairs.

Frank Dimant, Executive Vice President of B'nai Brith Canada commented on the new appointment, "Mrs. Armony brings to the position a wealth of knowledge and research experience on an array of issues of concern to Israel and the North American Jewish community. Her addition to the professional staff will enhance B'nai Brith Canada's ability to serve Canadian Jewry."

A doctoral candidate in the Political Science Department at Yale University, Mrs. Armony specializes in international relations with an empirical emphasis on Middle East affairs. Her dissertation, "State-Societal Relations and the Foreign Policy Process in Israel," examines the role of extra-parliamentary movements in the shaping of ideas on the Arab-Israeli conflict. She recently returned from Israel where she conducted archival research and interviewed current and past Knesset members and political activists.

Upon completion of her Master's Degree in Political Science at Yale in 1991, Mrs. Armony received a fellowship to attend the Moshe Dayan Center for Middle East Studies at Tel Aviv University. Her studies focused upon Ottoman and Arab history and the domestic and foreign policies of the Arab states and Iran.

Mrs. Armony graduated from Cornell University, Magna cum Laude and with Distinction in All Subjects, in 1989 with a B.A. in Government. At Cornell, she conducted extensive research on the history of anti-Semitism in the United States. Her honors thesis on this subject was awarded the Government Department's Sherman Bennett Prize for the best essay on free government.

In addition to her academic credentials, Mrs. Armony has also served the American Jewish community in her capacity as Community Liaison for the National Jewish Community Relations Advisory Council in New York.

The Institute for International Affairs has a mandate to protest the abuse of human rights throughout the world, promote human rights education, and advocate on behalf of Jewish communities in distress worldwide. Consisting of volunteer experts in international relations and professional staff, the Institute functions as a think tank. Its grass roots membership mobilizes to address issues of concern.
